Western Song is a profound examination of the tragic exploitation of people desperate to escape their third world economies and seek a better life in the United States. At first, the focus is on an admirable young man who feels responsible for the death of his best friend and his dilemma in treating the best friend's mail order bride who arrives unexpectedly from Thailand the day after her fiancée is killed, Gradually, we see the trauma the young woman has endured in her bitter life in Thailand and her legal efforts to help other refugees who are exploited by corrupt smugglers. While this novel is set in the West and its greatest villain is a Brahma bull with the improbable name of Baby Face who defiantly throws any cowboy who dares to ride it in a rodeo, it is, above all, a timely and sympathetic "song" which reveals the hopes and dreams of both Native Americans and those refugees who seek a home in the "land of the free." While Western Song soars with romance, both requited and unrequited, it also reveals the legal efforts to help exploited people brought to this country by immoral men,and the difficulties of life on a ranch in the West. Podgorski 's writing is vivid, her characters are dynamic, and her research is extensive. Her literary canon which began with The Women Debrowski continues to extend her literary reputation and reveals her expansive literary interests. A fine novel by a fine writer.

Western Song edition by Leigh Podgorski Romance eBooks Reviews

Western Song is a sweet, contemporary romance. Ms. Podgorski has an intimacy with modern “cowboy” lifestyle, and handles the weather, landmarks, and traditions of her Wyoming setting with facility. While this book is loyal to its roots in romance, there are numerous details, detours, and subplots that are not often found in by-the-numbers “romance” novels—and those additions strengthen Western Song immensely.

The diversity of cast in particular elevates this over many inferior works Shoshone and Asian characters add breadth to the traditional gruff cowboys looking for love and bourbon. The plot is coherent, but is unafraid to run well beyond “romance” formula, diverging from rodeos and rising rivers before such scenes can grow tiresome. Pleasant surprises include an exploration of immigration law, a grassroots movement weighing the introduction of a casino to the region, and several characters who do not “get what they deserve” (both good and bad) in the end.

I admit initial concern at (the character) Song’s broken English. The moment I read her first lines, I worried the book would drag along with reductionist problems. Happily, this is not the case. The realities of miscommunications, idiomatic expressions, and cultural collision are addressed maturely, often (and best) by the successful use of humor, that bridge of all cultures. Within a few lines of her initial meeting with the male lead, his Western slang is shown to be as far from “English” as Song’s limited but precise vocabulary.

Her character development is also exactly that development. Song’s slow, hard-working transformation from a mail-order bride is a pleasure to linger over, as she does not simply learn to accept the existing, if jarring, conditions around her while unrealistically settling for “true love” with the guy who picks her up at a train station… in two weeks. Instead, in the space of about a year, Song is shown as hard-working, a quick study, and while capable of compromise, she shapes her environment as much as it shapes her—there are few shortcuts taken in her evolution, and this results in a believably strong and compelling female lead, and one who—ironically, given her reception by some members of the town—is representative of the grit, adaptation, and cultural mixtures that were part and parcel of the “old west” flavoring the entire novel.

If I had one wish for this book, it would be a “final pass” from an editor/proofreader to catch the errant commas and the occasional peak/pique or shoot/chute accident. These rarely hurt the readability, but with a bit of cleaning-up, Western Song would be an even finer example of a contemporary western romance, and one that transcends its genre. As it stands, this is an excellent value considering it is available on Unlimited. There are a million titles in which two perfect young people move like chess pieces until they threw the bouquet, but with Western Song, the best parts are the risks and details that surround the heart of the story, which makes this an endearing and memorable read.
East meets west; tragedy meets hope; and an unlikely pairing meet their destiny. "Western Song" is the story of belonging- to one's self, to some one, to some thing, to some place. What begins with a collision of events twists and turns into a merger of hearts and minds, love and commitment, and 2 people's ultimately unshakable resolve to be together. A great read.
Good story. You will enjoy.
Leigh Podgorski can really write. There is an elegance to her words that cannot be taught. She is the real deal and so is Western Song, a title with many meanings. The story has the scope of a classic western and meshes with current issues in intriguing ways. The main character initially appears to be rough, kind hearted Weston who marries the title character for noble reasons. But really, this book is about Song's journey. When we meet her, she is lost in a land she doesn't truly understand. By the end, she is as strong and focused as anyone. Enjoy the book for its romance, its depth and its luscious Wyoming backdrop. This is a great tale.
Western Song by Leigh Podgorski is a love story with both heart and substance. I appreciated the efforts the author took to demonstrate the difficulties of moving to a strange land and learning the nuances of a new language. Subtle prejudices (and blatant ones) are revealed that propel the plot through many twists and turns. There are plenty of misunderstandings and plain bull-headedness from some of the characters ( very believable characters at that). I soon found myself relating to Weston Beaudurant, rancher and rodeo cowboy, who has more than a little bit in common with his nemesis- the bull named Baby Face! The novel touches on many relevant and live wire topics- bigotry, native rights, the price of individual freedom, as well as immigration concerns. These are handled deftly and not at all preachy. Western Song is a great read and a memorable one that I very much enjoyed. Pick yours up today!
