Unconditional A Masters and Mercenaries Novella edition by Lexi Blake Romance eBooks

I don't usually give novellas 5 stars. It can be hard to show character growth within the confines of the medium. Lexi Blake has no problem with that in Unconditional. Both Keith and Ashley show a lot of personal growth within the pages of this awesome little novella.

Very Brief Synopsis - We met Keith and Ashley in Sanctum, another novella in the Masters and Mercenaries series. Ashley comes to work at Sanctum, the BDSM club owned and operated by various characters we've met in the first 6 novels, when they aren't working for McKay and Taggert Security. Ian Taggert (aka Mephistopheles in Leather) needs a sub to see if Keith is worthy of Master status at Sanctum, and maneuvers Ashley into accepting the task. Ashley and Keith meet under carefully contracted terms, but soon, their attraction for each other grows. Keith has some secrets he is unwilling to share, but is very clear he is far from husband material. Ashley has some issues of her own, which come to light when a man is caught stalking her.

What worked - Oh good grief, everything worked here. I LOVED this novella. Keith is so alpha, so in control. Ryan(from Sanctum and Ashley's brother-in-law) calls him compartmentalized, and it is an accurate description. Keith sees Ashley at the club. Period. never mind that he calls her to ask about her classes, or what she had for lunch, or to see how her day is going. In Keith's mind, Ashley belongs in the Sanctum compartment. When he finds out Ashley is being harassed by her baby's grandparents, he is willing to help her, but not provide comfort outside of the club. He has big, big, BIG ghosts haunting him from his past, and is so brittle with his pain...I expected him to shatter with it. And the end, which I will not spoil for anyone, made me cry.

Ashley is a single working mom who is also going to school. She is accommodating, and doesn't really stand up for herself. As she becomes Keith's sub, she gains confidence in herself, and starts to speak out, not only in the scenes between her and Keith, but to others, as well. She is devoted to her baby, but wants to have a life for herself, too.

As in all of the books in this series, the BDSM parts are handled beautifully. Ms. Blake hints that Sanctum is one of a kind, and that in the real world, a good Dom is much harder to find. Within the confines of Sanctum, the subs really hold all the power, and thrive under the attention from their Doms. Keith teaches Ashley to appreciate herself and to know her own worth. I could feel how much they cared for each other from the beginning.

Ian is in rare form, even for Ian. Oh, the funny!!! I think I highlighted every scene he was in. We also had time with Serena and Avery and Charlotte, Jill, Ashley's sister, and Ryan, Jesse, Simon, Damon, Adam...Good, good times.

What didn't work - Nothing.

Bottom line - This is one freaking terrific series. If you haven't read any of the previous titles, you could start with this one, but do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. Yes, this series is BDSM-centric. The beauty of Ms. Blake's work is how seamlessly she weaves BDSM into the story, and how the psychology of each character explores why they need it without making the whole story revolve around sex and submission/dominance. Yes, there is a lot of sex. Yes, most of the sex is BDSM-related. But there is a ton of other stuff going on as well. These stories are so engaging and engrossing, and then yay! there is hawt as fire sex, too!!! Ms. Blake provides the trifecta of romance, with strong elements of romance, solid plot and wicked, delicious, nasty sex. Loved Unconditional, and can't wait for the next installments to this series.

Unconditional A Masters and Mercenaries Novella edition by Lexi Blake Romance eBooks Reviews

Unconditional was AMAZING! It will have you laughing one minute and crying the next! Nothing beats the many thoughts that come out of Ian’s mouth. But it’s how his wife can bring the big, mean Dom to his knee’s and put him in his place that will have you laughing out loud!

Unconditional is the story of Ashley and Keith. Ashley is trying to gain self confidence and realize that she is worthy of so much more than the raw deal she’s been dealt. Keith is running from his past and doesn’t let anyone get close enough to learn his secret. He is looking for a casual, no strings attached, D/s relationship. They are two people who need each other more than they realize; to understand that their past does not define them. Their individual stories are heartbreaking but together, their story is romantic and HOT!

Ashley and Keith’s relationship does not progress the way you think. As a Mom, I absolutely loved the ending! It was the most perfect, touching, emotional and romantic way for them to find their HEA! This is what I love about Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries series and what keeps me coming back ~ Her stories have something for everyone, suspense, romance and hot sex. You get caught up in the lives of an unconventional family who love and take care of each other unconditionally.
Certain authors and series are on my auto-buy list. Lexi Blake and her Masters & Mercenaries series is at the top of that list. So when her new novella Unconditional released, I had to read it on release day. I am so glad that I did, because this book offered everything I love about a Masters & Mercenaries book – alpha men, hot sex and sweet loving.

I knew that I was going to love Unconditional. First of all, it’s part of Ms. Blake’s Masters & Mercenaries series. One of the reasons that I love this series is because Ms. Blake has done a masterful job of creating characters so vibrant that I forget they are fictional. All of the characters in the Masters & Mercenaries series are full of life and passion, but never stagnant. I truly enjoy seeing them change and grow as they learn to love themselves and each other.

Ms. Blake’s heroes are never perfect, but damn do they come close. Keith is no exception. He is emotionally closed off because of a tragedy in his past. We learn about what happened in little glimpses over time. Once we learn his secret, we completely understand why he has shut himself off. And like Ashley, we want to hug him and hell him it’s going to be alright.

Ashley is suffering from low self-esteem (who of us isn’t) which makes her so relatable. Her first, and only boyfriend, left her with a daughter and no idea of how to have a successful physical relationship. Keith steps in her as her Dom and teaches her how to love herself. He just doesn’t realize that he needs to learn the same lesson.

This is where Ms. Blake excels – in the emotional side of the story. Though Unconditional is a novella, it still packs the same emotional punch of her full-length novels. I found myself unashamedly shedding a few tears as Keith overcame his fears. When Ashley’s daughter was threatened, I felt her fears and waited with baited breath to see how the problem would be resolved. But Ms. Blake also manages to instill some humor. My favorite line was when Keith described Ashley’s daughter as a “full on Domme in footie PJs.”

I had hoped that we would get to see some (okay, all) of our favorites from other books in the series and I whooped with joy when they appeared. Revisiting them is like being at a family reunion and getting to hang out with your favorite family members. They make you scream; they make you laugh; and sometimes they make you cry. But at the end of the day they are family and you love them.

Since Unconditional is a novella, it’s considered the 5.5th installment in the series. Lucky for us readers, the next installment is just around the corner and others are on their way. As long as Ms. Blake continues to offer such high quality books, I’ll be right there, ready to read. Thank goodness for pre-order so I don’t have to worry about missing a single page.
