The first day was a climb through a desert-like landscape. I started in the late afternoon and only had a few hours of hiking done before making camp. I read somewhere that the boogie-man is everywhere at night in the woods while you sleep in your tent. I think they were only half-right. It's really the boogie-bear that lurks in the shadows.
Bears have better noses than dogs. Some fishermen in Dunsmuir, the previous day, told me about a bear that had punched a hole in a car window because it smelled some spearmint chewing gum through a small crack left in the side window. Luckily, I have air-tight, scent-proof food bags that have been laboratory tested to ensure that no scent escapes.
Without these bags, I would likely fall into the situation that the hiker Janet was in only a few nights earlier. She saw a black bear early in the evening but thought that it had gone. It hadn't. Bears can smell from miles away. When she made camp, she cooked up a storm. The camp smelled beautifully. Beautiful for a bear. When she finished dinner, she hung her food bag from a tree. Janet woke up late into the night to a rustling sound. When she looked outside of her tent, she saw the bear trying to get at her bag. She screamed at it "F...

I really enjoyed reading this very short book about hiking alone. I thought it was interestingly written and should be enjoyable for anyone who is adventurous and possibly thinking of their own personal adventure.
It would however be important to read on the subject giving you pointers on necessary equipment needed.
